EXAMPLE
KellyM, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, 137 pages
This was a sad book to read, but I loved what happened with Annemarie's character when she realizes that she is the only person that can help save the lives of her friends. The interaction between Annemarie and the soldiers she runs into while she is speeding towards her uncle's boat is terrifying, but she shows great courage and uses all of her wits to make it through what could have quite possibly gotten her and her family into a huge amount of trouble.
I've never faced any dangers as threatening as what the Jewish families and those that attempted to help them faced during the Nazi invasion in Denmark, but the fight to show courage in the face of adversity is something I am familiar with. Early in the story, Annemarie believe that she is just a "normal" girl that no one will ever look to for help, but she learns that every person can do their part to be brave when the time comes. When I was 8, my family was in a terrible car accident. I was the first one to be pulled from the wreck, and I ran to the front of the car and began trying to help my parents and my sister escape the mangled remains of the vehicle. I think I surprised everyone, including myself, by fighting so hard to help out, when I was very seriously injured. This story is a great reminder that we can all be heroes, and that we all have the ability to be brave, even if we don't always see it.

KellyM, Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan, 262 pages
The change that Esperanza goes through is wonderful to read. Born in Mexico, she thinks she has lost everything when, 12 years later, she has to move to America and leave her home behind. Esperanza lived a life of luxury in Mexico, but when she enters America as a crop worker, she struggles to make sense of her new life. Watching Esperanza slowly transform from an over-privileged "princess" to a young woman filled with gratitude and hope was my favorite part of the book because I loved reading about Esperanza's strength, courage, and determination. I also thought the way the author used the names of the crops Esperanza and her family worked as titles for each chapter. This was the way they marked the passage of time; not by months, but by the fields of fruits and vegetables they worked side by side through the year.
Abuelita teaches Esperanza to crochet while they still live in Mexico, and when they are separated, Esperanza puts down her crochet needles, only taking them up again when her mother is very ill and she wants to finish the blanket for her. I was reminded of sitting outside with my own grandmother, clicking knitting needles together as I fumbled with the yarn. I gave up knitting after making one scarf, but taught myself again years later, when my grandmother (who lived several states away) became sick and I wanted to feel close to her again.

Spooky Texas Tales by Jim Jingle and Doc Moore 85 pages
My favorite part of Spooky Texas Tales is when they tell a story about this old man who lives in the forest and he finds a monster in his house and cuts off his tail so it runs away. He has 3 dogs and every time the monster comes back he'll send his dogs after him but each time one of the dogs won't come back so the monster ends up getting his tailybone back and killing the old man. I don't have a connection because these stories are all make believe and about ghosts and other creatures. My rating for this book is definitely 5
